CHARACTER INFO
Character: Tianyou Zhao
Canon: Yakuza: Like a Dragon, post game
Age: 28 (there isn't an exact age listed but he's either in his late 20s or early 30s so I'm picking this as an age)
Background Information: https://yakuza.fandom.com/wiki/Tianyou_Zhao
Personality: Please answer the following questions about your character. Be as clear as possible, and provide examples where you can. You can format this section as either 1) individual sections for each question; or 2) a more freeform essay/paragraph that covers all the topics. Please do not exceed 1200 words total.
1) Tell us about who your character is and what someone’s first impression would be upon meeting them. Zhao (he does not go by his first name in canon) is a Japanese citizen of Chinese ethnicity, trained since he was born to be a leader of a Chinese mafia group known at the Liumang in Ijincho, Yokohama. If someone were to meet him, it would be a grab bag of opinions. One is that Zhao is a man who lives by his own style – wearing nail polish, ring on every hand, lots of accessories, whatever those tights/leggings and shorts combo is – and carries himself confidently. Another is that because of how he looks and carries himself, there's an element of potential threat and danger lingering. Then when he opens his mouth and he's joking around, trying to start shit, then you second guess your earlier opinion, because no, he's just a fun troll...right?
2) What is a driving force your character has? What goals do they have, what motivates them, etc?
After being relieved from command of the Liumang, Zhao's choices have opened up significantly. Sure, he's homeless now, but he's now a part of a new crew (basically a dysfunctional family) where his opinions are respected because they're from him personally and not because of his former title. Zhao's stated that he's one of those people that can excel in the things he finds interesting and fulfilling. So it's mostly personal self-satisfaction that drives him. However, given his new status in Kasuga's crew, he can also begrudgingly admit that he takes the safety of those he cares about seriously and perhaps develop newer, non-lethal ways of dealing with whatever life throws at him.
One thing he's always enjoyed is fighting, being a practitioner of kung fu with just his fists or a sword. There's a party chat where he seems to joke to the others about knowing some drunken fist, but it's one of the rare times he's being genuine. He might not have enjoyed being a leader of the Liumang but he 100 percent had the fighting prowess to back it up.
3) What are their flaws as a character? What is something they've messed up, or have done that they regret?
Oof, this is a fun one. Zhao is good at excel ling in what he finds interesting and fulfilling, but the flipside is that he's not so great at the things he doesn't care about. One of those things is being the leader of the Liumang. However, because leadership passes through the family, he did not have a choice. In order to maintain the respect of his men, he basically had to subsume his own personality into that of a more bloodthirsty and coldhearted man. One of his men growing up with him – named Mabuchi – was exactly the kind of leader fit for the Liumang, highly motivated, willing to do whatever necessary to get ahead. Because Zhao does have a lot more compassion for his followers and those close to him (more than he was ever allowed to express), he made Mabuchi his right hand man, considering him a brother of sorts.
Unfortunately, that was a terrible idea, as Mabuchi's constant scheming to want to get ahead and take control kicks off most of the plot of the game. The fallout of the scheming is a civil war within the Liumang that fortunately didn't get Zhao killed. Even though letting Mabuchi do what he wanted was probably the biggest regret Zhao has at this point, and even though there's hatred on both sides, he still can't let Mabuchi be killed. He warns the other to leave town and never return.
Ironically, Zhao listening to his heart too much and trying to help out a brother cause a colossal fuck up that affected the entire town. The only thing that he managed to salvage from the situation was to give his former gang a leader they might actually respect.
4) Optional: What is something unique and interesting about them, or what is a fun little tidbit that sets them apart from the crowd? Would you believe that he's quite the cook? This is other great motivating force, being appreciated for making food for the party. One of the only joys of being the leader of the Liumang is being in charge of their restaurants. Perhaps now that he's free of that, he'll pursue something on his own...
Abilities & Inventory: (This whole section is taken from a previous app of Zhao)
Zhao will be bringing with him his canon outfit, Liu Chinese Saber, his massive accessory game he has going on (rings, bracelets, earrings, necklace, glasses), his phone, bottle of black nail polish, bottle of liquor, a lighter and a loaded gun.
Like a Dragon goes hard with ridiculous shit people can learn. Zhao is a master with Chinese Kempo, kung fu and using swords and random shit around to dispatch enemies. The game employs a job class system so there's a base class to every character and a set of job classes you can master as little or as much as you like. All the fun abilities are learned within the first 25-28 levels of a job class and everything else is just a stat boost. Usually if you are currently one job, you have access to everything you've learned in that and a select few abilities in anything else you're working on. So there are special attacks you can learn with the job and unblockable attacks called "Essence of..." that are top tier. Each character also has their own personal Essence of Attack that sticks with them regardless of job class. Zhao's is Essence of Deadly Beasts.
Gangster (default job) -- Where all the stabby stabby punchy punchy abilities are, including Kempo, several forms of kung fu and some drunken fist. Includes Essence of Phoenix Blade and Essence of Ladder Acrobatics.
Chef -- Attacking people with tools of the trade, including knives, razor sharp serving dishes and setting people ON FIRE with portable burners. Includes Essence of Human Grater and Essence of Searing
Breaker -- Breakdancing people into submission. Zhao's already fairly acrobatic so this feels like a good job class for him. Includes Essence of Rolling Mixer and Essence of Breakdance Delight.
This link here: https://youtu.be/Ad61fnXYJVY shows the Essence of Actions for the whole game and it has it divided so you can see what they are and decide if they should be nerfed. I am totally fine with the Chef Essences being nerfed or eliminated because they're really brutal.

ARMADA SELECTION
Choose between Corsairs or Paladins and include a brief blurb explaining why. Corsairs, 100 percent. Although Zhao didn't enjoy being in charge of the Liumang, he's lived his entire life in the criminal underworld. Being able to steal and do whatever he wants without being in charge of anything will be a breath of fresh air. Since there's no Kasuga to keep him in line, he'll be perfectly happy to explore how much of a pirate he'd like to be...

Can Zhao run a restaurant even if he steals most of the stuff he'll need?
